I have heard it said that he left many relatives, brothers and cousins, in North Carolina, I was born in 1844, and have taught school since 1866.

Silas Hearne, a grandson of James Hearne of Greensburg, Ind., date of Feby. 8, 1895, says:

My grandfather, James Hearne, was born in Maryland, I think in Somerset Co., and moved with his family from North Carolina in 1806 to Hamilton Co., Ohio. He moved in a four-horse wagon. the first one of that kind that crossed the Ohio river. He had eight children, five sans and three daughters; the sons were named Beverly, Jesse, James, Stephen M., and Isaac, and the girls were named Elizabeth, Nettie and Nancy; all the children were born in North Carolina, My father. Stephen M. Hearne, was born 1804. and was a farmer. He married Miss Rachel Polk, of the same family as President James K. Polk; they had seven children, five Sons and two daughters, and their names are: Lorenzo D., Simon L., Silas F., Jahn P., Albert M., Ann Eliza, and Elizabeth. My father, Stephen M. Hearne, was a United Brethren preacher for forty years. All of the first Hearnes in Ohio are dead. I, Silas F. Hearne, am a farmer and gardener. Jan., 1856, I was married to Miss Mary L. Frisier, in Dent, Hamilton Co., Ohio, where we lived for ten years. I was in the Union army three years during the war, and we have raised ten children: William F., Cordelia V., Charles W., Silas L., Ellis L., Alfred S., Anna Pearl. Mary L., Oscar G., and Horace S.

My oldest brother, Lorenzo D., lives in California and is a carpenter and builder; he is married and has three daughters, and they are all married. My brother, Simon L., married and died, leaving one son, Harmon R., who lives near Richmond, Kentucky; he is married and is a farmer. My brother John P. is married and lives near Dent, Hamilton Co., Ohio; he is a farmer and school teacher, and has two sans and one daughter; he served three years in the Union army during the war. My brother Albert M. is married, but has no children; he is a farmer and school teacher, living near Cincinnati, Ohio. My sister Ann Eliza married Obediah Jackson; both are dead, leaving four sons: William, Lorenzo, John and Frank, who are all grown and married. My sister Elizabeth is married and lives in California; she has no children.
