to Alabama in 1818-19, when it was a roadless forest, and continued a faithful minister of the gospel until his death, at Montgomery, Ala., Dec. 24, 1862.
My oldest brother was not a public man, but a machinist and engineer from youth, and resided in New Orleans, and died at my home in Talladega 1882. My remaining son, Wm. D., is a married man, without children, residing in Pine Bluff, Ark., and cashier of the Bank of Pine Bluff. My remaining daughter is Mrs. Broadstreet, and resides here, having two daughters. My wife is sixty years of age and active for her years, teaching in Sunday- school, etc. We are rearing, as best we can, two parentless grandsons, children of our eldest daughter. We had a very promising boy drowned at fifteen, while trying to save a little friend; both went down. We are sixty and sixty-five, and record our testimony that God is good -- good in giving. good in withholding. It is rare that an itinerant Methodist preacher, with a family, receives a sufficient salary to lay up anything for "a rainy day," and so we came to superannuation as we began, poor. But friends came in the right time, and provided us a comfortable home. We haven't much - don't need much. You can't shake my wife's faith, and in the darkest hour she will sing, "The Lord will provide." And she says, so long as birds fly and God's storehouse is not empty. we shall be supplied, certain. We are peaceful and happy, trusting our God for all needed help. I am proud of my name, my State, and my church (the Methodist Episcopal Church South).
I learn from a friend in Talladega that Rev. Wm. C. Hearne is a man of far more than ordinary ability and attainments, serving with distinguished gallantry as a Confederate soldier, retiring a lientenant-colonel. He is a man of unusual power in the pulpit, an ardent temperance worker, an humble, devoted Christian in all respects, and universally beloved by all classes of people. Lucy, wife of Rev. Wm. C., died late in 1899 or early in 1900, and he is still living at this date, Aug. 1906.
John Hearne, son of Thomas and Rachel Drewry. born 1794. died 1857. Married Priscilla Bonner, and lived in Cherokee Co., Texas. Children: Robert, Albert, Ebenezer, William, Thomas B. of Paris, Texas, John and Joseph.
