Bruce served through the Civil war a Confederate soldier, in the 17th Virginia Cavalry. After the close of the war he married Martha Hale, and they reared nine children: Catherine Jane, married Frank Hale; Sarah Julana, born July 16, 1869, married Mar. 12, 1891, Perry G.
