The strange case of William Bolton and Sarah Hearne, the mystery mother Mary of Joanna Bolton. In the 1850 census, William is shown apparently married to Mary (19) with a child Joanna. Sarah Hearne is shown as a member of the household, but distinctly still carrying her maiden name, and apparently not married to William. Not strange that William had a previous wife, but very strange that a second wife was living with him and the first wife. The most reasonable explanation is Sarah is a sister of Mary, the first wife.
NOTE: Because Hearne lists William's marriage to Sarah in 1848, I am leaving her birth connected to Sarah.
