Before the war he was a Whig and strong Union man till his State seceded and since then he and his sons have been Democrats. At the commencement of the War he owned large property in slaves, being the wealthiest man in the county and after the wreck of the Civil War had sufficient left to give his children as good an education as the country afforded and a good start in life. He carried on farming and merchandising both successfully.
