He and his cousin Clement went out eight miles from Albemarle to the Pee Dee river that was swollen very high from recent rains. They attempted to cross it in a canoe and in the effort the boat capsized and he drowned. Clement was saved by his coat lapel hanging on a snag in some driftwood.This was sometime previous to 1798. He was buried at his home. The name of his wife and two of his daughters are not known.
