of the war. On June 29, 1862, while engaged in making a charge on McClellan's army in front of a battery, he was struck in the head and severly wounded by a piece of shell, which disabled him from field duty the balance of the war. On April 4, 1867, he married Miss Mattie R. Hooker and settled in Greenville, N. C., and engaged in merchandising. Children: William Augustus Bernard, born July 5, 1869; Mary Ada, born September 3, 1872, and Mattie Marcella, born October 28, 1874.

William A. B. married Miss Louisa Star May, January 26, 1904. Children: Lucille, born July 6, 1906; Marcellus Bernard, born August 14, 1907; William, born August 17, 1909, and Champ Poe, born December 7, 1910.

Mary Ada Hearne married Joseph Edward Sugg, November 5, 1900, and he died ten days after. There is a sad and pathetic romance here: Mr. Sugg and Ada Hearne were engaged to be married and she came to help nurse him when he became seriously ill with typhoid fever and when it became apparent he must die they were married. She is now living a widow in Greenville, N. C. Her sister, Mattie Marcella is unmarried.

Reuben Marcellus Hearne's wife died in 1877, in Florida, where he had taken her in the hope of prolonging her life. October 18, 1888, he married his second wife, Miss Mary Acca Warren, and they have one child, Edward Warren, born May, 1892, who is now a student in King's Business College, Raleigh, N. C. The family all live in Greenville, N. C.

Benjamin Howel, son of John and Pennetta Hearne, married Miss Charlotte E. Moore, February 26, 1867. Children: John Linwood, born December 1, 1867; Emma Estell, born April 21, 1869; Isabella Augustus, born March 13, 1873; Mack Orlando, born April 21, 1875; Cotta Geraldine, born June 28, 1879; Closs Wightman, born February 28, 1884; Leland Leroy, born April 17, 1889.

John Linwood Hearne, born 1867, married Miss Effie Geneva Morris, April 14, 1896, and they have one son, John Linwood Jr., born ________. They live in Farbow N. C.

Emma Estell Hearne married John Forbes Evans, January 30, 1890. Children: James Otis, Arthur Kennedy, Marvis
