millstones by placing it upon a sled, securing it as well as possible, and hitching one horse before the other, and cutting a path before them through the forest wide enough for the sled to pass through; they made the trip of eight miles in seven days, and on the ninth day deposited their first load at home, and in the same manner transported the remainder over the same route; and thus was built the first mill for grinding corn in the then Gallatin, but now Owen Co.,Ky."

I find it very difficult to straighten out the genealogy of Jacob Hearne's family, as I have it in broken sections, furnished me by different members of it, and hence I give it as I have it, leaving it for different ones who are most interested to untangle that which pertains to them. Besides, many to whom I wrote for information and whom I was assured could give me much, failed to answer my inquiries or letters.

Major Campbell S. Hearne, of Quincy, Illinois, and a grandson of Jacob Hearne, sent me quite an old family record, from which I copy.

Jacob Hearne, son of Jacob and Janet, his wife, born Oct. 8, 1770. Jane Harrison, daughter of Jeremiah Harrison and Sally, his wife, born October 5, 1779. Jacob Hearne and Jane Harrison were married Feb. 17, 1796. Children: Sally, born Dec. 15, 1796; Louise Smith, born Mar. 2, 1799; Harrison, born Sept. 28, 1801; Warren, born June 17, 1805; Luke, born May 30, 1808; Elizabeth, born Mar. 5, 1812; Melvina Young, born Aug. 29, 1815; Jane, wife of Jacob Hearne, died Feb. 20, 1830.

Jacob Hearne married second wife, Mrs Mary Coleman, and to them was born a son, Jacob Maglothlin, Apr. 28, 1837. Mary Hearne, the second wife, died June 5, 1847.

Luke Hearne died Nov. 14, 1824, from injuries received by being thrown from a horse. Sally Hearne married Jeremiah Harrison 1818 and died Feb. 15, 1848. Lavisa Hearne died Aug. 4, 1834. Elizabeth Hearne married Lewis Thomas, July 9, 1839. Melvina Young Hearne married Josiah B. Still Mar. 28, 1839, and died June 10, 1849.

Harrison Hearne, son of Jacob and Jane, born in Versailles, Woodford Co., Ky., Sept. 28, 1801; married Mary Smith Sept. 28, 1824. Children: Fleming Granville, born July 22, 1826; Ethelinda, married James P. Bacon; William Warren; Clara J., born Aug. 9,
