always to fulfill the Golden Rule, and was a great friend to the poor. His wife Louise was a devoted and earnest member of the Methodist Church. His youngest son, Sidney H. Hearne, lives at his homestead, which is a lovely home and well preserved, as is the home of Nehemiah Hearne, the first settler of the name here.

Sidney H. Hearne is the owner and proprietor of the Hotel Hearne in Albemarle, and also carries on his farm, which supplies the hotel. He was county treasurer for several years. He married Miss Ellen J. Heilig, Oct. 20, 1880. Children: Mary Louise, born 1881; Lottie Jane, born 1882; Ebenezer Lasson, born 1884; Sarah Ellen, born 1885; Bessie King, born 1886; Helen Russell, born 1891; Laura Frances, born 1892; Ruth Letita, born 1894; Rosa Heilig, born 1896. This family are members of the Lutheran Church.

March 19, 1902, Mary L. Hearne married Henry Arthur, Klueppelburg, a wealthy business man of Charlotte, N. C. It was a brilliant wedding. The presents were elegant and varied, amounting in value to more than $2,000.

Isabella Jennie, daughter of Ebenezer Hearne married Burton Smith, of Miss., who was a graduate of Chapel Hill, N. Carolina. He only lived five months. In a few years she married Richard A. Caldwell, a son of Judge David Caldwell, of Salisbury, N. Carolina. He also was a graduate of Chapel Hill, and a fine lawyer, now dead, and his widow lives with her brother at the old home place. She is a Methodist, as was her mother and all her sisters.

Letitia A., daughter of Ebenezer Hearne, married Dr. P. W. Wooley, and died 1879, leaving one child, Fred, born 1852, who graduated at West point with first honors, and is now living in New York City, a lieutenant. He married Miss Mary Warren, of Philadelphia, 1884. Children: Burgess, born 1886; Fred, born 1887 and Mary B., born 1901.

James D., son of Ebenezer Hearne, married Miss Josie Melchar, and died 1878, leaving one child, Lizzie, born 1866, who married Dr. Ogden King, and lives in Albermarle. Children: Ogden Deremus, born 1888; Josie Theresa, born 1890; James Francis, born 1891 and Blanche C., born 1897.

William H., son of Ebenezer and Louise Hearne, married Miss Fannie Swift 1873. Children: Annie Swift, born 1875; Emma
