farming with success. George Free married Miss Parker, and lives on his father's old homestead near Damascus, Ga., he is a prosperous farmer, and has three children. Luther Lafayette Free, born 1860, is unmarried and is a general trader and farmer.

BRYANT L., only son of Abner and Keziah (Bryan) Hearn, born Dec. 27, 1839. Was educated in Edgefield, South Carolina, and emigrated with his parents, 1859, to Georgia. 1860 he was a successful teacher at the Bryant-Sheffield School House, Miller Co., Ga. Jan., 1861, he engaged in the mercantile business at Colquitt. Ga., and May of that year entered the Confederate Army, in Company H, 6th Georgia regiment, in command of Col. A. H. Colquitt. He served four years, most of the time in Virginia, and at the battle of Fort Harrison, Va., Sept. 29, 1864, he lost his right leg which incapacitated him for active service; so in Dec. he returned home and assisted his father in collecting the war taxes until the close of the war May, 1865; he taught school till the end of that year, when he was elected tax collector for the county. May 6, 1866, he married Miss Susan A. Brown, of Jefferson Co., Ala. 1867 he engaged in the mercantile business in Colquitt, Ga., but sold out in six months, with a profit of $1,500, and bought a farm in Miller Co., Ga.; and 1871 he moved to Cairo, Thomas, Co., Ga., where he engaged in various enterprises till 1876, when he invested in Florida land and grew an orange grove in Hernando Co. In this he was successful, and 1886 sold out, but remained in Cairo till 1891, when he removed to Atlanta, Ga., where he still resides, engaged in the real estate and commission business, in which he was also engaged in the summer of 1890 and 1891 in New York City and Jacksonville, Florida. In politics he is a Democrat, and he and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church. Children: Beatrice, Abner Lafayette, Mattie Kizzie, Nannie A., Lottie M., Amy, Willie O. and Vannie A. Beatrice, born in 1868, commenced teaching school quite young, and taught for several years. 1891 she married Walter S. Russell, of Jacksonville, Florida, where they reside. They have had three children, only one of whom is living. Mr. Russell is a successful newspaper man. Abner Lafayette, born June, 1870 1889 he married Miss Annie Michler, of Florida, settled in Hernando County, Fla., having a good orange grove. Children: Bryant Eugene, born 1891; Willie Abner, born 1894; and
