his heavenward prospect, his way was as clear as the noonday sun. The night before his death, when he had almost lost the power of articulation, he said, distinctly, to those who hung around him with fond affection: "0 that I had the wings of a dove, that I might fly away and be at rest!" After this he was several times heard to say, "Glory !" which is believed to have been the last word that escaped his lips before he left the world and entered the paradise of God.
Rev. Isham Hearne was the father of twelve children, one of whom died in infancy; he raised eleven, and lived to see them all active members of the Methodist Church South. One son, the Rev. Isham G. Hearne, was a minister of the gospel, and several years a member of the Memphis Annual Conference; he entered the Confederate army as captain of a company, and fell at the battle of Shilok while fighting bravely in defense of the Southern cause. Rev. Isham Hearne has left eight-five grandchildren and seventy-five great-grandchildren. May they all emulate his example, follow him as he followed Christ, and at last meet him around the throne of the Eeternal. J. G. ACTON.
Sophronia R., daughter of Rev. Isham and Amy Hearne, married
Rev. T. L. Garland, 1828. He was a Methodist minister and
preached the gospel till his death, 1868. in White Co., Ark. They
had seven children: all lived to be grown and had families, and I
give all I can learn of them. Thomas died in Texas. Martha,
born 1829, married J. L. Walsh, 1854. He was a merchant. John
born 1831, was a physician, entered the Confederate army, was
captain of Company A, 26th Arkansas Infantry; lost a leg at
Helena; was captured and taken to Johnson's Island. After the
war resumed the practice of medicine and married Mary Slaughter,
and had three sons and one daughter. All are dead except the
son Marvin, born 1881. Isham Green Garland, was a Lieut. in
Confederate army, was wounded and came home to Augusta,
Ark., and married Miss Shelly and had one daughter. Tom Garland
was in Confederate army and died at Mineral Wells, Tex.
Robert R. Garland, born in Madison Co., Tenn., 1841, went to
Arkansas, 1860, served through the war in Confederate army married.
1865, Josephine McSwain and bought a small farm in Columbia
Co., Ark. Has been a farmer ever since. In 1881 he bought
a small farm adjoining Emmet, Nevada Co., Ark., where he now
