Tippah Co., with a beautiful residence in Ripley, Miss. Joel A. Hearne says:
My paternal grandfather, Jesse Heearne, was born in Maryland 1748, and his father was born near the close of the seventeenth century, and I think his name was Stephen, and had a brother named Elisha. My paternal grandfather was Ebenezer Hearne, born Oct. 11, 1760, and died 1840; his father was Purnell Hearne, who removed from N. Carolina to Wilson Co., Tenn., 1800. My grandfathers were cousins and Ebenezer lived and died in N. Carolina, Montgomery Co. My paternal grandfather, Jesse Hearne, lived in Cabarrus Co., N. Carolina, where my father, Thomas Hearne, was born Feb. 21, 1793, and died in Union (then Tippah) Co., Miss., June 18, 1855. My mother was Miss Diana (called Dicey) Hearne and born Apr. 3, 1796. In my childhood days I remember my mother having many old English books, two of which I now have. The title of one is "Guthrie's Grammar" (1786), which is a general history of the then known world. The other is the Holy Bible, published at Cambridge, England, 1769 and it has the records of births and deaths of many of the family, some of which I give.
Children of Jesse Hearne born in Maryland, 1748: Sally, born Dec. 5. 1774, died Aug. 27. 1841; Betsy, born Sept. 6,1779; George W. born Dec. 28, 1781; John, born June 7, 1784; Jessie Lee, born Jan. 16, 1787; Ann, born Dec. 4, 1788, died many years ago in the Osage Nation; Susannah. born Jan. 18, 1790; Thomas (father of Joel A.), born Feb. 21, 1793, died June 18, 1855; William Spencer, born May 2, 1796, died 1818.
Joel A. Hearne's great-uncle William's son, Noah Gordon Hearne, died at Independence. Henderson Co., Tenn., 1840. His great-uncle Wiley Harris, whose mother was a Hearne, died in Madison Co., Tenn., 1840. He left a number of sons, several of whom were eminent preachers in the Methodist Church. Rev. Isham Hearne was a grand preacher in his day; his son, Capt. Isham Gillium Heearne, was killed at the battle of Shiloh, Apr. 6, 1862.
Joel A. says he remembers hearing old Aunt Betsy Hearne speak often of Cannon and Clement Hearne. Cannon, who was the father of W. T. Hearne (the writer), in 1830 went to Georgia with hogs and horses, and doubtless met some of these Hearnes, very
