Hearne History - Page 489

when my cousin Thomas Hearne was standing in the pulpit at a camp-meeting at old Centre, in North Carolina, and sung this song, that I have known forty to come forward to be prayed for at one time while it was being sung: [song reformatted for legibility - bjc] "Come, poor sinner, Christ invites you to partake his offer; Let His goodness now constrain you; leave your sins and seek His face. While the gospel trumpet's sounding, every land and nation hear. All that sin the Savior's wounded; now is the time for to prepare. "But you do reject the offers; Jesus calls, you will not hear. Riches, glory, life He proffers, but you will not lend an ear. Soon you'll hear the trumpet sounding, saying, Time shall be no more!' Then you'll hear and be confounded, and in vain God's help implore. "The earth a-reeling, quaking, trembling; the moon will then turn to blood The sun be darkened; stars a-tumbling; vengeance pouring like a flood; The skies a-blazing, melting, rumbling on this frightened world below. O my friends, it will be shocking to all who do not Jesus know. "Arise, arise, and come to judgment, all ye nations under ground! Sinners, you must hear the trumpet and from all your graves rebound. All the world, both dead and living, must come to hear their doom; Some a-shouting, some a-howling, as they do to judgment come. "Hear poor sinners' teeth a-gnashing see their faces turning dark, Vengeance in their eyes a-flashing, all their sins upon their heart. Then you'll call to mind the offers you have had to turn and live. Yes, ye gospel-slighting scoffers, this will then fresh torment give. "Hear the sentence, 'Go, ye cursed! you would not my counsel take; When I called, you refused; away to yonder fiery lake!' Wives and husbands then be parted, some to heaven and some to hell.
