Of JOHN HEARNE, youngest son of Rev. Jacob S. Hearne, his brother George, of Watertown, Tenn., says:
My brother John professed religion at old Crag Wall's Schoolhouse, about two and one-half miles northeast of Watertown, when he was about fourteen or fifteen years old, and joined the Methodist Church, and afterward became a preacher of the gospel. After preaching five or six years, he joined the Missionary Baptists. He was then living near a little town called Round Top, about six miles southwest of Alexandria, De Kalb Co.; his membership was at Upper Helton. He preached there and at Round Top and Lower Helton for some time, and then moved to what is called the old Silas Bower's place, one-half mile south of Alexandria, De Kalb Co., where he lived till he died. We moved his membership to Brush Creek, Smith Co., and was pastor of that church for about six years, preaching there every second Saturday and Sunday in the month; the first Saturday and Sunday he preached at Beasley's Bend, nine miles north of Lebanon; the third Saturday and Sunday at New Middleton, Smith Co.; and the fourth Saturday and Sunday at Macedonia, at Cooper's Chapel, Smith Fork, Dry Ford, and Statesville. He had every Saturday and Sunday in the month filled up till his health began to fail. For five or six years before he died he gave up the care of all his churches, and, when he was well enough, preached first at one place and then another, a good deal of the time in Jackson County.
Feb. 21, 1895, I received from the family at Watertown, Tenn., sixty-eight pages (foolscap) of closely written matter by Rev. Jacob Hearne, dated Aug. 15, 1867, when he was seventy-two years of age; it gives only a small amount of genealogy or family record, but is chiefly an account of his conversion, religious experience, call to the ministry, and his varied and multiplied labors therein,
