red, many of whom personally knew this wonderful man of God. His son George says:
My grandfather, George Hearne, married Tabitha Skein; my great-grandfather was Thomas Hearne, who married Nancy Wilson. My grandfather, George Hearne, removed from North Carolina 1804, and located on Spring Creek, and, after living there one year, removed to a farm two miles east of Watertown, Tenn., and lived there till his death, July 9, 1850, aged seventy-six years; his wife, Tabitha (Skein) Hearne, died Mar. 6, 1856, aged eighty-two years.
My father (Jacob) served through the war of 1812 under Gen. Jackson, and about the close of the war joined the Methodist Church, and almost immediately became a minister of the gospel and went west to preach to the Indians, and remained among them twenty years. A favorite text with him was, "Look unto me and be saved." After his return from the Indians, he married and went to eastern Tenn., traveling and preaching for twenty years, and then settled down on the farm on which I now live, two miles southeast of Watertown, Tenn., where he lived till his death, preaching the gospel to the end.
His wife, Martha Jane, born May 8, 1817, died June 15, 1894. They raised a family of nine children. whom they lived to see grown and married, except one, and that is the writer (George L.). who is now living at the old home place; trying to raise and care for three of the children of his deceased brother John, who died June 20, 1889, having been a preacher of the gospel for twenty years; his wife died about the same time. He was a good and useful preacher.
The names of the children of my father (Jacob Hearne) are: Mary E., Joseph J., Martha, Sallie, George L., Pitts, Mark, Elizabeth (who died Nov. 13, 1889), and John (who became a preacher.)
The grandchildren number about forty-five and the great- grandchildren number about as many more, but I cannot give their names or date of birth, etc.
George L. Hearne sent me the following records (from the old Bible) of Jacob Hearne's children, etc.
Mary, born Aug. 8, 1837; in 1857 married Bob Neal and died July 10, 1876. Elizabeth, born June 13, 1839, married John Marks, died Nov. 13, 1899. Joseph, born Dec. 3, 1841, married Susan
