comparatively little. In 1841 he married Miss Jane C. Alexander and settled on a farm; 1842 he joined the Baptist Church at Thompson’s Creek, Tenn.; was licensed to preach 1847, was ordained 1848, preached for Thompson’s Creek, Holly Springs, and Head W. Sandays churches in Tenn., removing to Texas 1859, still laboring on a farm and preaching to Meirose, Providence, Buena Vista, Concord, New Camen and East Hamilton Churches, all during the Civil War and since, until he was about worn out; he lived at Center, Shelby Co., Texas. He was moderator of the Central Association ten years and of Shelby County three years. He has baptized some two hundred and fifty persons and married nearly three hundred couples. He raised a family of eight children, most of whom lived to be grown and have married and settled. Two of his daughters, Mattie and Alice, are single and live at his old home. I met him at Dallas, Texas, at Southern Baptist Convention May, 1894, and while he showed age, he looked quite well, and I was led to hope might live many years to preach the gospel he loved so well and had preached for near half a century. I learn from a near relative that his daughter Mattie is unusually bright and frequently writes for the press. He was in quite good circumstances financially, ample to live comfortably to the end, which came Sept. 2, 1900, his wife having died Aug. 14, 1887.

Matthews Oct. 13, 1863. Children: Wm. F., born Oct. 6, 1864; Ben Hill, born Dec. 1866; Jennie F., born Aug. 14, 1869; Erasmus Hearne, born Mar. 19, 1872; John H., born Aug. 6, 1876; Sallie Belle, born Oct. 14, 1881; Angus A., born Oct. 15, 1884. Ben Hill Matthews married Miss Mabra Clark, 1887; children: Clifton, born 1889; Virgie, born 1890; Baby, born 1892. Jane F. Matthews, married Wm. Henson; children: Alice, born 1887; John W., born 1889; Zula, born 1892. Octavia. third child of Erasmus and Jane C. Hearne, born April 27, 1848. married D. M. McKnight Jan. 7th. 1868.
