EMANUAL BERRY HEARNE entered the Confederate army at its commencement, when only seventeen years of age, served to the dose of the war, and came home penniless and an orphan (his father and mother having died when he was small), with three sisters and a little brother to take care of. The father had always said he wanted the little brother William Thomas to be a doctor. Undaunted, Emanuel B. went to work and managed to take care of the sisters and send the brother to school and educated him for a physician, and he is now a successful practitioner and a very worthy citizen at York Station, Ala., happily married and has five children, Madge Lama, Ida May, Mama Boland, Edward Hay and Velma Gertrude. In marriage Emanuel B. was fortunate in getting a true help-mate, and by industry and perseverance has not only raised a large family of children, but has been eminently successful in business, now owning and operating a large mill and dry goods store at Hearne’s Mill, Sumter County, Ala.
George, son of William and Elizabeth (Presnal) Hearne, born Feb. 27, 1819, in Lauderdale Co., Ala., married Miss Virginia Ewing Greer Aug. 5, 1841, and emigrated the same fall to Louisiana, near Minden, and died 1863 of measles, while serving in the Confederate army. He had twelve children, the youngest of whom is named George Marion, now living at Shreveport, Louisiana, and he writes me that only four of the children are living: Susie, Mattie, Genevieve and himself. He says:
GEORGE MARION HEARNE (myself) was born Nov. 17, 1861, married Sept. 17, 1891, Miss Louella, daughter of Wm. Clark Applegate, of Brunswick, Missouri, and we have two children, the eldest a daughter, Marion, and the youngest a son, George M., Jr., now four months old (March 22, 1895). I am a traveling salesman for Ely & Walker Dry Goods Company, St. Louis, Missouri, and have been for the past seven years. My grandmother Hearne’s maiden name was Lizzie Presnall, and one of her brothers, Harrison, moved in 1854 from Louisiana to Texas, near San Antonio, and his son Jesse is now living there. My great-grandfather Greer lived in South Carolina; he served trough the Revolutionary War under Gen. Marion, and this is where the name Marion in our family came
