He was born in Chickasaw County in 1849, but was reared in Attala County by his parents, Asa and Mary (Crocker,) Hearne, the former of whom was born in Georgia, but at an early day removed with his father to Monroe Co., Miss.; he was marfled in Monroe Co., and from there removed to Chickasaw Co., thence to Attala, Co., where he lived the remainder of his days, dying near Jackson, Miss., 1863, while in the service of his country. He was a well-to-do planter and teacher, and was an honorable and useful citizen and member of society. He belonged to the A. F. & A. M. and the Baptist Church. He was the only child of Jacob Hearne, who removed from Georgia to Mississippi, but afterwards returned to the former State, and died in Walker County at quite an advanced age; he was a well-to-do planter prior to the war; he had been marriied three times. The maternal grandfather died in South Carolina when Mrs. Hearne was a small child; she is still living and resides at West Point. Of a family of three Sons and six daughters born to her union, six are now living. S. L, Hearne was brought up as a farmer’s boy, with a common-school education, and at an early age began the battle of life for himself, as a planter, a calling he continued wit fair results until 1878, when he came to West Point and engaged in merchandising, which has since been his occupation. He is now one of the leading merchants of the place and is one of its most enterprising and prominent citizens. He started in life a poor boy, and by his untiring energy and good business management he has accumulated a handsome competency, which he has in real estate in West Point and also in other valuable investments. He is one of the most popular citizens of the city and is a leader in financial circles; he possesses a wonderful capacity for business and is a genial and courteous gentleman, upright in all his methods of conducting his affairs; he has a magnificent home in West Point and is deservedly proud of his record as a financier. He was married in 1871 to Miss Hattie, daughter of the Rev. Dr. James A. Ware, a South Carolinian by birth, who came to Pontotoc County, Mississippi, at an early day, where he became a prominent physician and Baptist minister ancf one of the county’s best citizens. He and his wife both died there. Mrs. Hearne was born in Pontotoc County and has borne Mr. Hearne two children. They are
