T. J. Davis, Cave Springs, Georgia, writes me, 1894:

I am now eighty-five years old, and suppose I am the only man now living in Georgia that knew Lot Hearne. My father and he were warm friends; both were strong Baptists, and when I was quite a youth, he and his wife used to visit my father. I don’t think he had any children. He visited Cave Spring in 3839, and was attracted by the beautiful valley and location; so at his death, in 1844, be gave by his will $12,5oo to be placed in the hands of the Baptist State Convention, to be managed by the executive committee of that body for the school, which was then incorporated and called the Hearn School, now the Hearne Male School and Female Seminary. It hu been in successful operation ever since. The school is gttcn up by a joint stock company, all Baptists, and is in charge of Prof. Cloud Gray, with two assistant teachers and Palemon J. King as principal, and they have seventy-eight scholars enrolled at the present time. The female department is taught by Miss Elin Pounde, a descendant of the Hearne family and a very talented lady. The school owns very valuable property, on which are located the school buildings, boarding house, church building, etc. The interest on the Hearne fund is used for keeping up improvements, aiding teachers by small bonuses, and paying tuition of beneficiaries, young men looking to the ministry. I have been a trustee since 1846, and am the only surviving member of the original body. Lot Hearne lived and died in Morgan County, Georgia; he stood high in the Baptist Church, a valuable member, and was classed with the first men of our denomination.

Jacob Hearne, born July 29, 1797, son of Jonathan and brother of Lot, married Miss Mary McClendon, and to them two daughters and a son, named Asa, were born. The daughters died when quite young. After the death of his wife, be married Miss Sabrina E. Callaway, who lived but a little while, and he married the third wife, Miss Lucinda C. Lovorn. There were no children by these last marriages. Jacob Hearne was a devoted Baptist, a great singer and withal a good man. He was born in Georgia and after his first marriage moved to Mississippi, and lived in Pontotoc and Attala conties. The Civil war swept away most of his property, and after its close he sold his land and removed to his native state, Georgia, where he died in 1873, aged seventy-six years. Asa, son of Jacob and Mary (McClendon) Hearne, was born 1825, and was educated at Mercer University, then located at Penfield, Georgia. He came
