fidelity to his master, the king took him into his royal favor and protection.

In the next reign it was intrusted by Henry I. to Eustice Fitz- John, who was dispossessed of it and his other employment by King Stephen, that king being jealous of his attachment to Maud, daughter of Henry I.

Wiliam Heron, son of Jordan Heron, who held a barony in the county, by the service of one knight’s fee, as his ancestors had done from the Conquest, was, in the 32nd of Henry III., 1248, constituted Governor of Bamborough Castle, and of those of Pickering and Scarborough on Yorkshire, in which appointments he was succeeded, in the 37th of the same reign, by John de Lexington, Knt., chief-Justice of all the forests north of Trent.

Anno 1296, King Edward I, summoned John Baliol, the King of Scotland, to appear before him at this castle, to answer, to a breach of faith; but, he not appearing, Edward attacked and took Warwick and put the garrison to the sword.

Isabel de Beaumont, related to Eleanor, queen of Edward I., and widow first of John de Vesey, afterwards of John, Duke of Brabant, had grant of this castle for her life, on the proviso that she did not marry again. During her possession Piers de Gavestone was placed here by the king to save him from the vengeance of an injured and incensed nobility, who after, in 1312. dragged him to justice from the castle of Scarborough.

It was a short time held by Roger Heron, a younger son of the family of William Heron before mentioned; after which it was conferred on Henry Percy, who was made Governor of this and Scarborough Castle, for his good services in the Scottish wars.

Anno 1643, this castle was besieged by the Yorkists under the command of the Earl of Arundel, Lord Ogle, and the Lord Montague. It was surrendered on Christmas eve, and the Duke of Somerset and Sir Ralph Percy. who had held it for King Henry, were pardoned and received into favor

Anno 1644, Sir Ralph Gray, having surprised this castle, garrisoned it with Scotchmen and held it for the king. He was besieged by the Earls of Northumberland, and Warwick, and knowing that he could expect no favor, defended it till the end of July, when a tower being beat down by their cannon, which in its fall crushed snd stunned him that he was taken up for dead, the garrison surrendered,
